How to Choose Gym Flooring Thickness: A Zone-by-Zone Guide

Why Thickness Is the First Decision

Every week importers ask us the same question: "What thickness should I order?" The honest factory answer is that there is no single right thickness — there is only the right thickness for each zone of the gym. A floor that is too thin under a deadlift platform will crack within months; a floor that is too thick under cardio machines wastes 30–40% of your material budget.

Thickness drives three things: impact absorption, durability, and price per square meter. Choosing by zone instead of ordering one thickness for the whole building is how experienced gym chains keep their flooring cost under control.

Zone-by-Zone Recommendations

Free-weight and deadlift zones: 15–20 mm rubber rolls or 30–50 mm crumb bumper mats. Dropped dumbbells and loaded barbells generate point impacts of hundreds of kilograms; anything under 15 mm will show permanent dents and transfer noise to the floor below.

Strength machine areas: 8–10 mm rolls are the sweet spot. Machines sit stationary, so you need surface protection and grip, not deep impact absorption. This is where most buyers overspend — 10 mm protects both the floor and the machine base perfectly.

Functional training and stretching zones: 6–8 mm keeps the area comfortable for floor work while staying easy to clean. Cardio zones around treadmills: 6 mm is enough.

Kindergartens and playgrounds (our outdoor paver customers): fall-height protection is regulated — for a 1.5 m fall height you typically need 30–40 mm; check your local safety standard (EN 1177 in Europe, ASTM F1292 in the US).

The Mistake We See Most Often

The most common mistake is ordering one thickness for the entire facility to simplify purchasing. A 500 m² gym ordered at uniform 15 mm pays roughly 25% more material than a zoned plan (15 mm for 100 m² of free weights, 8–10 mm for 300 m² of machines, 6 mm for 100 m² of functional area) — and the thin zones perform worse than they should.
