How Thick Should Rubber Gym Flooring Be? A Zone-by-Zone Guide

How Thick Should Rubber Gym Flooring Be? A Zone-by-Zone Guide

The Short Answer

For most gyms, 15–25 mm rubber tiles cover general training areas, while free-weight zones need 30–50 mm or dedicated 1×1 m mats.

Choosing thickness by zone, not by budget alone, protects both your floor and your equipment.

Match Thickness to Impact, Not Just Foot Traffic

- 6–10 mm: cardio and machine zones — treadmills, bikes, rowers. Protects the floor finish from equipment feet; minimal impact absorption.

- 15–25 mm: general training, functional areas, dumbbell work up to ~20 kg. The most common choice for commercial gyms.

- 30–50 mm: free-weight platforms, deadlift and Olympic lifting zones, barbell drop areas. Absorbs repeated impact and protects the slab underneath.

- 1×1 m rubber mats (30–50 mm): heavy lifting stations; loose-laid, so they can be swapped individually.

Thickness vs. Durability

Thicker tiles do not just absorb more shock — the load is spread over more material, so compression set and wear slow down.

A 25 mm tile in a general zone routinely outlasts two 10 mm tiles replaced in sequence.

Other Factors That Matter as Much as Thickness

- Density: denser granule compounds handle static load (racks, platforms) better

- Wear layer: a bonded EPDM top layer protects the cushioning base

- Subfloor: concrete slabs need less thickness than timber floors over a crawl space

Common Mistakes to Avoid

- Using 8 mm tiles under free weights — they bottom out on the first dropped plate

- Over-specifying 50 mm everywhere — unnecessary cost and a soft feel under machines

- Ignoring edge ramps in transition zones (tripping risk between thicknesses)
